The desired outcome throughout the design process is for our projects to be as environmentally compatible, functionally efficient, aesthetically individual while being as economically feasible as we can make them. Our goal is to encourage and generate as much innovative, collaborative, and creative input from the client, ourselves and consultants alike.
WEST TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY - Canyon, TX
The West Texas A&M University Pedestrian Mall and Hayward Spirit Tower were conceived and designed to become the center of campus outdoor gathering place with recognizable campus icons and spaces for students, faculty and the public. Removing several existing roadways to eliminate any pedestrian / vehicular conflicts, creating usable hardscape space surrounded by softening landscape planting, adding a sculpture fountain and an iconic 83 foot high clock tower all contribute to a sense of place that all of the University and the visiting public can identify as the center of campus.
Fronting the south side of the Pedestrian Mall is the historic “Old Main” which was the first and original building to be built when the College was founded in 1910 and which now houses the University Administration. Integrating a more contemporary outdoor space within this existing historical context required a high level of design sensitivity while still satisfying the program of requirements established by the University faculty and staff for creating a place that all could enjoy. Some of the elements incorporated into the design of the outdoor mall included pedestrian scale site lighting complying with Dark Skies, wireless networking, pavement ice/snow melt system, low maintenance plantings, efficient landscape irrigation system, permanent shade structures, seating areas and other site amenities. Coordination of and leading the team of mechanical, electrical, fountain, and civil engineering consultants by Turner LandArchitecture in developing the project along with the University Planning and Facilities Staff, various regulatory agencies, and user groups culminated in an asset to the campus that enjoys high level of recognition, use and pride.
